Designers Are Judged Visually First
Before reading a single word of your bio, creative directors evaluate whether your portfolio looks good. This means the portfolio itself must be a demonstration of your design skills.
The 12-Point Designer Portfolio Checklist
- A visually striking hero with your specialty clearly stated
- 4-6 case studies (not just pretty pictures — show your process)
- Before/after comparisons where possible
- Mockups for client projects that maintain NDA where needed
- Personal projects showing creative freedom
- Tools and software you're proficient in
- Awards, features, and recognitions
- Client testimonials (even short ones matter)
- Your design philosophy in 2-3 sentences
- Clearly visible contact information
- Links to Behance/Dribbble for more work
- A resume download option
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Never show work you don't like. Never include student projects unless they're genuinely impressive. Never use stock photos as your own work.
