Designers Are Judged Visually First

Before reading a single word of your bio, creative directors evaluate whether your portfolio looks good. This means the portfolio itself must be a demonstration of your design skills.

The 12-Point Designer Portfolio Checklist

  1. A visually striking hero with your specialty clearly stated
  2. 4-6 case studies (not just pretty pictures — show your process)
  3. Before/after comparisons where possible
  4. Mockups for client projects that maintain NDA where needed
  5. Personal projects showing creative freedom
  6. Tools and software you're proficient in
  7. Awards, features, and recognitions
  8. Client testimonials (even short ones matter)
  9. Your design philosophy in 2-3 sentences
  10. Clearly visible contact information
  11. Links to Behance/Dribbble for more work
  12. A resume download option

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Never show work you don't like. Never include student projects unless they're genuinely impressive. Never use stock photos as your own work.
